14.Repeat step 13 using the original aqueous layer and 100 mL fresh EtOAc each time. Repeat this step until the organic phase has very little pink color in it after shaking and separation of the phases (see Note 15 ).

15.To a 500 mL Erlenmeyer flask containing the aqueous phase, add 4 M HCl dropwise until pH 3 is achieved. CAUTION! Adding acid to the aqueous phases will evolve toxic NO x gases. Make sure to do this step in a well-ventilated area (see Note 16 ).

16.Add the acidified aqueous phase to the 500 mL separatory funnel along with 100 mL fresh EtOAc. Shake the separatory funnel to mix the two phases, and let them settle out. The product will extract into the organic phase. Drain the two layers into separate 500 mL Erlenmeyer flasks (see Note 17 ).
